RECOMMENDED FOUNDATION EDUCATION
FOR PROFESSIONAL DOG TRAINERS
While there are very little barriers to starting a dog training business, a solid foundation education for a new trainer is essential. Very few people are able to pull up stakes for in-person learning, but there is a whole world of fantastic virtual education opportunities for new trainers these days. Many individual trainers offer their own courses, but there are very few places where a new trainer can get “just the facts” to really prepare them for starting their training journey.
During her time at CATCH Jayne offered direct study support through their courses as well as developed and ran a series of online workshops. The only formal canine education school that we wholeheartedly endorse is CATCH Canine Training Academy. Jayne has been involved with CATCH since 2019 and was lucky enough to teach through them for much of the last 4 years. CATCH has a variety of different virtual courses and workshops but for dog trainers we recommend either the Masterclass course or even better the Master Class Community (?) course, which includes access to a community of CATCH students & graduates through the CATCH virtual campus.
FOR DOG WALKERS AND DOG SITTERS
CATCH Canine Training Academy also offers entry-level courses suitable for those wanting to enter the pet care industry. You can click here to learn more about those courses. These courses place a heavier focus on building skills for a professional training career and may be using dog walking or sitting as a stepping stone for that path.
For those not yet able to pay for a foundation education course, Canine Case Studies board-member Anna Greenberg has a great self-published book you can check out! Anna’s program focuses on handling dogs directly yourself and does not go into depth on offering training programs directly to clients. STUDY CLUB!
Jayne is spearheading the development of a virtual community meeting space for dog professionals called the Canine Case Studies Study Clubs. Canine Case Studies is working to fill the gap in the need for neutral, not-for-profit online community gathering spaces. As of now, all quality communities are attached to a name-brand course. While those are valuable in-groups, the Canine Case Studies board has noticed that the only current “neutral” online gathering place is through Facebook groups, or by connecting with individual trainers via social media platforms. In the modern training community digital/online networking with other trainers is essential. Unfortunately the vitriolic and dysfunctional social media mindset created by within those platforms often seeps into professional networking and creates social drama that gets in the way of conserving a community mindset.

There is a required entry exam for the canine professional study club. This exam is a combination of multiple choice and short answer exam questions. You can click here to navigate to our free preparatory courses. Students who do not pass the exam can re-take it following completion oof an approved pre-requisite course.
